Empathic concerns promotes genuine altruistic motivation

At a glance one would not understand the connectivity of this topic. The in-depth meaning, if clearly surfaced, surely the attitude towards the community service would be changed. It is prudent, divide the sentence into fragments to easy-off the ambiguity and discuss severally  when it is deemed too complex to discern.

On the above context, let’s review the phrases of ‘Empathic concerns’ and ‘altruistic motivation’ individually and define.

The term “empathy” is used to describe a wide range of experiences. In simple term, empathy is the ability or practice of imagining or trying to understand deeply what someone else is feeling. So as the empathic concern is what it is  like to be in their situation.

Altruism is the motivation to do good things for others. Again motivation can be defined as desire or willingness to do something. Perhaps the ambiguity of the topic is now a bit relaxed in terms of complexity.

Actually the key ingredient to helping is “empathic concern”. As we read in Wikipedia (the free encyclopedia), altruism does not exist unless benefits to the helper outweigh the costs. Basically if someone feels empathy towards another person, he will help them, regardless of what he can gain from it. Also people help others as they find pleasure at seeing other person experience relief. Yet there are many arguments about the helping behaviour. One cannot rule-out there would not be selfish or hidden agendas behind it. However, we are reviewing here only the – genuine altruistic motivation.

Turning to the topic; a key question in research on empathy is what interpersonal motivations might be activated by empathy. Does empathy promote only a concern with other’s outcomes (“altruism”), as well as decreased concern with one’s own outcomes (“selflessness”), or an increased concern with equality in outcomes (“egalitarianism”)? Empathy promote pro-social behavior. Research suggests that empathically aroused individuals help those in need, even when physical escape from the need situation is easy, and this evidence has been used to support the claim that empathy evokes an altruistic motive. Empathy-Induced Altruism and Morality

The empathy-altruism hypothesis states that empathic concern produces altruistic motivation. In this hypothesis, empathic concern refers to other-oriented emotion elicited by and congruent with the perceived welfare of a person in need; it includes feelings of sympathy, compassion, tenderness, and the like. Altruistic motivation refers to a motivational state with the goal of increasing the welfare of the person with the empathy-inducing need.
